Apropos of absolutely nothing
The Daft Punk rumour mill has been working overtime the past few weeks. What with Giorgio Moroder and Paul Williams confirming both their involvement and the existence of a news blackout (er…), there’s been a fair wodge to chew on. Now, with the existence of previously unknown song ‘Renoma Street’ acknowledged in French electromusic mag Tsugi, the rumour mill has gone, for lack of a better word, batshit.
Anyone who’s been following my Twitter or Tumblr in recent weeks will know there is no album I’m waiting for more this year. I’ve applied an email policy which roughly equates to ‘Daft Punk or GTFO’. Basically I’ve descended into total fangirl. Even given all that, I’m slightly reticent to declare ‘Renoma Street’ a definite new track, for now, simply because the duo have done this before. And recently. Remember ‘Drive’ which everyone thought was new, but turned out to be previously from 1994? Yeah.
However, all my fangirling has led to a slightly odd conclusion, and the ‘apropos of nothing’ title. I should point out this is blind speculation and has zero basis in fact, but:
One of my all-time ‘wish I’d been there’ musical moments is Daft Punk appearing at Phoenix’s Madison Square Garden gig back in 2010. The two groups have a lot of shared history. And, oh yes, tendency to do impromptu performances at MSG that still make me wail.
All signs are pointing to Daft Punk releasing their new album this year. Phoenix are also expected to release the follow-up to Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix this year.
I am merely pointing this out. You can join your own dots here.
(Disclaimer: there probably aren’t any dots to join and I’m just commenting on it for the hell of being a squeeing fangirl getting albums from two of her favourite acts this year. So, y’know, don’t shoot me.)
